Top 6: Favorite Poetry

It took me a while to get into poetry so if you think you don’t like it, you haven’t found the right collection yet. Poetry is a lot like music, it puts raw human emotions into words which can be either beautiful or cringe-y. I’ve noticed I tend to like shorter, sweeter poems than long verses, but you could be the opposite. Either way, I highly recommend you give these ones a try and I’ve included pictures of my favorite poems so you can get a little taste.

(No particular order)

1. Great Goddesses: Life Lessons from Myths and Monsters by Nikita Gill

This is definitely my favorite poetry collection I’ve ever read. What can I say, I’m weak for Greek mythology, especially A) when it also has modern takes and B) SHOWS A HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN HADES AND PERSEPHONE. The poetry is very story-like so it’s a good start if you’re just trying out poetry.

2. Poems of the Irish People by Various Authors

The most prosy collection on this list. In this you get to see the works of many different authors, but they all beautifully express their love for their homeland. It is split into three sections; the Land, the Lore and the People which was a nice way to do it and lets you learn a little bit about Ireland’s myth and history.

3. Worlds of You by Beau Taplin

I think this was the first poetry book I bought to read and it is probably the one that influenced my own poetry writing. As you can tell by the taps still in the book, I really loved it. I feel very connected to this collection, seeing myself in almost every verse and prose. A super easy poetry read as well so great for beginners.

4. To Drink Coffee with a Ghost by Amanda Lovelace

This was the first book I read by this author (purely bought it for the cover) and though I have read her first series (Women Are Some Kind of Magic), it still remains my favorite of her works. This collection (and all of hers) come with a trigger warning so please read that before you start. The poems are beautifully written if sometimes dark and emotional.

5. In Search of Magick by Samantha Nicole Traina

This author also runs the witchy YouTube channel; Shadow Harvest and her poetry is all about witchcraft and paganism. Even if you don’t subscribe to these beliefs, the poems are light and fun and dip in to her own journey of her practice. Another short easy read for beginner poetry readers.

6. G’Morning, G’Night by Lin-Manuel Miranda

So this is a bit of a strange one. Originally, I had this under my favorite non-fiction, but on reflection, it fitted much better under poetry. If you somehow don’t know, Lin-Manuel Miranda is the creator of the broadway hit musical, Hamilton. When he’s not writing raps about the founding fathers, he’s on Twitter and is in the habit of tweeting good morning and good night, with messages of encouragement or reflection. He then decided to publish his favorites in this little book. It is short, sweet and uplifting. I highly recommend you read it one every morning and night just to really get the feel. When I get my new bedside table, I plan to have it there to reread when I need a good pick-me-up.

Hope you give some of those poetry books a try. This is the perfect post to end the month with for next month is National Poetry Month which will give you a hint at the theme for the next series of posts so stay tune.
