Hobbit Garden: Autumn 2023

The garden has been quite lively since I last updated you guys.

First, our basil has a trunk, which we didn’t know could happen.

Our parsley has exploded and we have sprouts of thyme, cilantro, and new green onions. We are planning on getting a pop-up greenhouse for our herb bed so we will hopefully get to keep our basil plants alive all year round.

Our blackberries are so tall now we had to install support poles for them.

Our mint everywhere is also very happy and even bloomed which is something I haven’t seen and looked really cute. All three of our bay trees have new growth and, despite a bunch of fruits, we have not gotten a ripe lemon…yet.

In the backyard, we have discovered this new creeping weed. Once Kyle has verified it is alright, we are planning on trying to spread it to help keep the grass down.

Our creeping fig along the back wall has also finally started to grow and spread.

The mystic spires (a relative to a sage) has had a second bloom and has been a favorite all summer of bees and butterflies alike.

Here is a little list of things we are planning to get done in the garden this autumn:

  • weed / clear dead plants

  • make a plant schedule for 2024

  • train blackberries + rosemary

  • setup birdbath + feeder

  • deadhead mystic spires

  • buy pop-up green house

The end of the year always goes so quick, so we will see you next year for a winter update!
