Hobbit Garden: Summer 2023

Summer is always the hardest time for gardening, especially here in SoCal where the heat has been gruesome. As a result, we lost most of the herb starters we planted because we unknowingly did it right as the temperature picked up. We are planning to replant either in the autumn or next spring. But, our basil has been extremely happy, as you can see by the growth difference, and tastes incredible as well. We also have some parsley that is hanging on and some green onions which have taken well.

Our second bed we have been filling with our compost scraps and cardboard which has filled it almost half way already. Before we lay down soil, we will definitely be purchasing a proper compost. We also started laying out what will be our pumpkin/watermelon bed.

The best part of our garden has been our blackberries. We didn’t expect such a large crop this year and the berries themselves are the best we’ve ever had. It has been lovely going out in the morning and picking fresh blackberries to have with breakfast. We are excited for next year’s crop which will hopefully be larger so we can do things like jam and infused gin.

Weeds are still a little out of hand and we still have so much we want to do, but over all, we are happy with how our garden is turning out and the produce it is producing. Hope you enjoyed this little update and fingers crossed there will be more to report come the colder months.
